PGA FLYOVER BRIDGE SELECTED FOR AIA AWARD

Palm City, Florida –Ed Oliver, the leader of the “Alpha Division” of the long-established architectural firm of Oliver-Glidden-Spina & Partners, recently received an AIA “Award of Excellence for Special Public Project Design for the “PGA Flyover Bridge” on PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, presented by the Treasure Coast Chapter of the AIA.

“Our firm was commissioned by the PGA Corridor Association and supported by the City of Palm Beach Gardens to design a bridge with significant architectural elements that would contribute to the overall PGA corridor and that would reflect the city’s commitment to well designed projects. The City and the PGA Corridor Association (comprised of the major landowners along PGA Boulevard) felt that this bridge should not be a standard FDOT bridge but that its location deserved to make a much stronger architectural statement. Included in the Mediterranean design were four main towers that provide the main design elements of the overall design located at the intersection of PGA Boulevard and A1A. Each tower was designed to receive a lighted sculpture that would provide visual interest. Each of which feature a sculpture selected through the city’s Art in Public Places design-competition. The sculpture, “Astralis”, displays a stainless steel globe and “florets” with a programmed series of changing lights that provide a different dimension at night”, explained Ed Oliver. The main vertical design element of the towers are further complimented with gateposts & pylons along the flyover..

Since “palm trees” are an integral part of the city’s name as well as its official seal, palm trees were selected as the primary landscaping element along the entire half-mile length of the bridge. The architectural firm also designed several decorative cast stone “palm tree’ medallion which further enhances the “Bridge of Palms” image.
